If you would like to change the size of your car’s tyres or require a new set of tyres, it’s imperative that you ensure the ride height and speedometer ratings are not altered too significantly. You will find that car and tyre manufacturers will have relevant guidelines in place. Your tyre size is displayed on the sidewall of your existing tyres and the size is made up of a combination of letters and numbers. It’s important to note that front and rear sets of tyres will often differ in size.
The format of your tyre size will look something like this: NNN/NNLNN NNL
N refers to a number between 0-9 and L relates to a letter of the alphabet.
NNN/ – This is your tyre width in millimetres
/NN – This is your tyre profile i.e. the height of the tyre sidewall as a percentage of its width. This is also referred to as the aspect ratio.
LNN – This number is the wheel size i.e. he diameter of the tyre’s inner rim (in inches)
NN – This is the load rating which indicates what weight each tyre can carry.
L – This indicates the maximum speed for the tyre at full load.
